Geography and administration

Gharbia lies in the central sector of the delta, surrounded by irrigation canals and crisscrossed by secondary waterways that draw from the Nile branches. The governorate is divided into several administrative districts (markaz and cities) that manage urban services, rural villages and agricultural land. Its position in the delta makes it an important part of Egypt's food-producing heartland.

Economy and land use

The economy of Gharbia blends agriculture and industry. The surrounding plains are used intensively for crops such as cotton, rice and cereals, while nearby processing and manufacturing facilities add value. El Mahalla El Kubra is historically known for large cotton-textile mills and associated trades. Other towns host light industry, food processing and commercial services that serve both local and regional markets.

History and culture

Like much of the Nile Delta, the area has long-settled communities with roots in ancient and medieval Egyptian history. Gharbia's towns developed through agricultural prosperity and later industrialization in the modern period. Tanta is noted for its religious and cultural life, including an annual religious festival (moulid) connected to a prominent Sufi shrine that attracts pilgrims and visitors from across the country.
