Gevgelija Municipality (Macedonian: Општина Гевгелија) is an administrative unit in the southern part of the Republic of North Macedonia. The municipal seat is the town of Gevgelija, which gives the municipality its name. It lies within the country's Southeastern Statistical Region and reported a population of 22,988 in the 2002 census.

Overview and geography

The municipality occupies a strategic location near the southern border of the country. It sits in the Vardar River valley and is influenced by a mix of continental and Mediterranean climatic patterns, producing hot summers and milder winters compared with the interior highlands. Its position close to neighbouring Greece shapes much of its economic and transport activity.

Administrative structure and settlements

Gevgelija Municipality comprises the central town and a number of surrounding villages and rural settlements. As a local government unit it manages services such as local roads, utilities, schools and municipal planning for both urban and rural populations. The municipality is part of broader regional planning within the Southeastern Statistical Region.

History and development

The area around Gevgelija has been inhabited for centuries and benefited from its place on routes that connect the interior of the Balkan peninsula with the Aegean coast. Over time the town developed as a local market and transit point. More recently, modern road and rail improvements have reinforced its role as a link between Skopje and southern ports.

Economy, transport and tourism

The local economy combines agriculture, cross-border trade and service industries. Productive lowland fields support crops and horticulture, while commerce tied to the nearby border crossing and to road and rail connections contributes to employment. The municipality also attracts visitors for day trips and short-stay tourism linked to casinos, hospitality and entertainment facilities in the town, and to regional cultural and natural attractions.

Notable features and importance

  • Border position: close to the international frontier with Greece, influencing trade and travel.
  • Transport corridor: situated on key north–south routes that connect the country to Aegean ports.
