Overview

Friederike de Haas (16 August 1944 – 17 June 2019) was a German politician affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union. She represented constituents in the Landtag of the Free State of Saxony from the re‑establishment of the state parliament after German reunification in 1990 until 2009. Over nearly two decades she combined regional legislative work with involvement in civic and commemorative institutions.

Political career and public roles

De Haas entered the Saxon Landtag at a formative moment in the state's modern history and remained an elected member for multiple terms. During her tenure she took part in parliamentary work typical of state legislators, addressing regional legislation, constituency matters and party responsibilities. Outside the parliamentary chamber she also engaged with organizations concerned with remembrance and social welfare.

Chair of the German War Graves Commission

One of her notable public roles was chairing the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge). The commission is a long‑standing organization that cares for war graves, maintains memorial sites, and promotes international cooperation and education about the human cost of war. Under her leadership the commission continued its dual missions of grave maintenance and civic remembrance.

Awards and recognition

In recognition of her public service, Friederike de Haas received the Order of Merit of the Free State of Saxony in 2012. This regional decoration honors individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the social, cultural, economic or political life of Saxony.

Personal life and legacy

De Haas was born in Bielatal in 1944. She and her husband, who worked as a gynaecologist, raised four children. She died on 17 June 2019 at the age of 74.
