Domestically he moved away from some of his uncle's enlightened, centralizing tendencies and showed greater deference to aristocratic and religious interests. On the international stage Prussia under Frederick William II participated in the later partitions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, gaining substantial territory in the 1790s. He also negotiated a separate peace with Revolutionary France in 1795, removing Prussia from the main coalition against Paris and accepting the new balance of power in western Germany.

Cultural patronage

Like many contemporary monarchs, he was a notable patron of the arts and architecture. His reign supported building projects in Berlin and Potsdam, music and sculpture, and cultivated a courtly culture that blended late Baroque and early Neoclassical tastes.
