Columbu was born in the village of Ollolai on the island of Sardinia. He began strength training as a young man and developed a compact, muscular physique combined with notable raw strength. His background in multiple strength disciplines—bodybuilding, weightlifting and powerlifting—shaped an approach to training that emphasized heavy compound movements and functional power.
Competitive career
Columbu competed at the highest levels of bodybuilding and strength sport. He won the prestigious Mr. Olympia title on more than one occasion, including victories that established him among the era’s elite. He also took part in strength contests and strongman-style events, demonstrating the crossover between maximal strength and muscular development that marked his competitive profile.
Acting, writing and professional work
Beyond the gym, Columbu appeared in supporting and cameo roles in several mainstream films, bringing a distinctive physical presence to genre productions such as Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. He authored books and articles on weight training, nutrition and injury prevention, and worked professionally as a chiropractor and trainer, advising athletes and publishing practical guidance drawn from long experience.
Later life and death
Columbu remained an active figure within the bodybuilding community through public appearances and correspondence with fans. In late August 2019 he suffered a medical emergency while in the coastal town of San Teodoro. Contemporary reports indicate he experienced a suspected heart attack and subsequently drowned while in the water; he was 78 years old.
Legacy
Columbu is remembered for combining high levels of strength with a competitive bodybuilding physique, for his close association with other leading figures of his generation, and for communicating practical training methods through writing and teaching. His career illustrates the overlap between strength sports and bodybuilding at a formative time for both pursuits.
