Overview
Francisco Núñez Olivera (13 December 1904 – 29 January 2018) was a Spanish supercentenarian who, for a short period in 2017–2018, was recognized as the world's oldest living man. Born in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Núñez lived through major events of 20th-century Spain and reached the age of 113 years and 47 days at his death.
Early life and military service
Raised in rural Spain, Núñez joined the military as a young man. At about 19 years old he took part in the Rif War, a conflict in northern Africa in which Spanish forces were involved in the 1920s. He later served during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, experiences that shaped much of his adult life. He acquired the nickname "Marchena," after the popular singer Pepe Marchena, because of a perceived resemblance.
Later years and health
Núñez remained active into advanced age. Medical procedures in later life included the removal of a kidney at age 90 and cataract surgery at 98. Despite these interventions, he continued to be celebrated locally for his longevity and for reaching an age few attain. His longevity came during a period when validated male supercentenarians were comparatively rare worldwide.
Recognition as the world's oldest man
Following the death of Israeli supercentenarian Yisrael Kristal in August 2017, Núñez was identified by record-keeping organizations as the oldest living man. Such recognition depends on documentary verification of birth and identity. Núñez's status as the world’s oldest man was widely reported in Spanish and international media before his death on 29 January 2018.
Legacy and context
Francisco Núñez Olivera is remembered both as a witness to Spain's 20th-century history and as an example in studies of extreme longevity. Supercentenarians attract interest from demographers and gerontologists because they represent the upper extremes of human lifespan. While individual stories like Núñez’s are notable, researchers stress that long life likely results from a combination of genetics, environment and chance.
