Ford Freestyle

The Ford Taurus X is a seven-seat crossover SUV that was manufactured by Ford Motor Company in the USA. The car was sandwiched between the five-seat Edge and the Flex, also a seven-seat crossover SUV, within the model range. It replaced the Freestyle, which had been introduced in 2005 and could be seen as a further development of this model. The name Taurus was chosen because it was built on the same platform as the Ford Taurus.

The Taurus X was introduced at the Chicago Auto Show in mid-2007, along with the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, revised versions of the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego. The car was designed to compete with vehicles such as the Hyundai Veracruz, Suzuki XL7, Saturn Outlook and Toyota Highlander. Within the Ford range, the Taurus X was also intended to offer customers an alternative to the Explorer.

Ford director Alan Mulally noted that Ford's marketing idea of having the names of all new models begin with the letter F meant that prospective buyers did not memorise the names of the new Ford models. Therefore, the Freestyle was renamed Taurus X, and the sedans Five Hundred and Mercury Montego reverted to the traditional names Taurus and Sable.

In terms of design, the Taurus X is similar to the Ford Edge. Like the Edge, the Taurus X also has the redesigned Ford grille with three horizontal chrome bars, in the middle of which the Ford plum is placed. The car features an aggressive front end, chrome trim and LED tail lights. Similar to the Explorer, the Taurus X was also available in an Eddie Bauer trim level. Like its predecessor, the Ford Freestyle, the vehicle has three rows of seats and, like many much larger vehicles, offers space for seven people.

The Taurus X was based on the Ford D3 platform, but its revised powertrain was no longer linked to the CVT transmission used on the Freestyle. The Taurus X featured a new 6-speed automatic transmission jointly developed by Ford and GM and a new Ford Duratec 3.5 V6 engine.

The car was optionally available with electrically folding seats and an electrically operated tailgate. Like its predecessor, the Taurus X has a raised seating position for easier entry and exit.

Production of the Taurus X was discontinued with the Ford Taurus model change in summer 2009.
