Format and participants

Sixteen teams qualified for the event and were drawn into four groups of four. After a round-robin group stage the top two teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals, followed by semifinals and medal matches. Matches were hosted in a number of cities, with the Jamsil complex in Seoul serving as the principal stadium.

Rules and context

Because of the eligibility framework in place, national federations often selected squads that mixed experienced and emerging players.
