Design and symbolism

The flag consists of three broad horizontal bands — a top red stripe, a central blue stripe and a bottom green stripe. Each pair of main colours is separated by a thin white fimbriation. The colours are commonly interpreted as follows: red evokes the sun and the savanna; blue represents the Gambia River that runs the length of the country; green stands for agriculture and the forests; and the white lines signify peace and unity.
