Design and characteristics

Visually the flag combines only two colors: a dominant red field and a bright, golden-yellow sun figure at the centre. The sun has eight principal rays that expand in width toward the perimeter, giving the impression of a bursting or radiating light. The composition is intentionally bold and simplified for easy recognition at a distance and for manufacturing.

History and development

The current design dates from the mid-1990s and replaced an earlier post-independence emblem. That earlier device used a star-like sun motif that led to objections from neighboring countries, prompting a negotiated change. Earlier still, during the Yugoslav period, republic-level flags employed red fields with socialist insignia. The modern flag was adopted to provide a distinctive national symbol acceptable in international diplomacy.

The sun motif connects with regional history and iconography but the contemporary depiction is a stylised, modern rendering rather than a direct copy of older archaeological emblems. Discussions about symbolism have included references to liberty and national renewal; such meanings are commonly cited in public discourse.

Official uses include display on government buildings, diplomatic missions and at state ceremonies. Protocol and rules for display, folding and retirement are set by national regulations so that the flag is treated as the principal national emblem.
