The national flag of Andorra was officially adopted in 1866. It is composed of three vertical bands in blue, yellow and red, with the country's Coat of arms of Andorra placed in the middle of the central stripe.

Design details

The flag uses a vertical tricolour arrangement. Although the three coloured stripes appear equal at first glance, the center (yellow) band is slightly wider than the outer blue and red bands; the relative widths are 8:9:8. The heraldic device sits over the yellow stripe and includes the national motto Virtus Unita Fortior, commonly rendered in English as "United virtue is stronger" or "Strength united is stronger."

Influences and symbolism

The colour scheme and vertical layout show the influence of neighbouring powers: the flag's appearance echoes elements found on the flags of France and Spain. The arrangement and the central coat of arms together signify Andorra's historical ties and sovereignty.
