Design and symbolism

The central coat of arms is flanked by two human figures and surrounded by a wreath of mahogany leaves. The shield within the coat of arms depicts tools and a ship, alluding to the importance of shipbuilding, shipping and the historic timber industry. The national motto, Sub Umbra Floreo ("Under the shade I flourish"), appears below the shield. The mahogany leaves recall the former dominance of mahogany logging in the territory.

Colors and political meaning

The primary field color, blue, and the narrow red stripes reflect modern political realities: blue is associated with the People's United Party and red with the United Democratic Party. The addition of red stripes to a predominantly blue field was intended to acknowledge both major political traditions and promote a sense of national balance.
