Fishman was the ring name of José Ángel Nájera Sánchez (January 6, 1951 – April 8, 2017), a Mexican professional wrestler who became one of the most recognizable masked performers in lucha libre during the 1970s and 1980s. Performing for major Mexican promotions and making regular appearances abroad, Fishman built a career on the theatricality and athleticism that define the enmascarado tradition.

Career and promotions

Fishman competed for several of Mexico's leading promotions across multiple decades, including Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL), the Universal Wrestling Association (UWA), the World Wrestling Association (WWA) and Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA). He also toured internationally with frequent trips to Japan and the United States, bringing Mexican-style masked wrestling to broader audiences. Over his career he worked against many of the era's top stars and featured in high-profile matches that helped cement his reputation.

Persona and the mask

The Fishman persona was built around his distinctive fish-themed mask and costume, a common practice in lucha libre where character design and symbolic imagery play central roles. As an enmascarado, his mask was both a performance prop and a personal identity; masks in Mexican wrestling carry cultural weight and are tied to a fighter's honor and mystique. Like other luchadores, Fishman participated in "Lucha de Apuestas" (bet matches) in which a wrestler stakes his mask or hair—matches that often serve as climactic moments in a career.

Unmasking and later life

In 2000 Fishman lost a mask-vs-mask match and was unmasked, revealing his birth name in keeping with lucha libre tradition. That unmasking marked the final phase of his in-ring career; he retired from active competition soon afterward. His passing on April 8, 2017, was attributed to a heart attack, and it prompted tributes from fans and peers who remembered his impact on Mexican wrestling.

Legacy and family

Fishman's legacy is preserved both in memories of his matches and in his family: three of his sons followed him into the profession as masked wrestlers under the names Black Fish, El Hijo del Fishman and El Único de Ciudad Juárez. Through them and through the recordings and stories of his bouts, Fishman remains a recognized figure in the history of lucha libre.
