The village perches on a sunny hillside overlooking the confluence where the Albula/Alvra river descends from the Albula Pass and the Landwasser flows down from Davos. History and administration

For much of its modern history Filisur functioned as an independent municipality. On 1 January 2018 the local administration merged with neighboring Bergün/Bravuogn to form the new municipality of Bergün Filisur. The area remains part of the historic canton of Graubünden, noted for its multilingual heritage and mountain communities.

Filisur is best known for its association with the Rhaetian Railway and the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, a stone railway bridge that spans a steep valley and is a highlight of the Albula line. Local buildings show traditional alpine stone and timber design, with a small parish church and compact village core.
