Bergün (Kreis) wappen.svg

Bergün Filisur is a mountain municipality in eastern Switzerland. It lies in the Albula area of the canton of Graubünden and is associated with the historical Albula district. The modern administrative unit was created on 1 January 2018 when the former municipalities of Bergün/Bravuogn and Filisur merged to form a single municipality.

Overview and character

The new municipality preserves two distinct village centres that reflect traditional alpine architecture, mountain farming and seasonal tourism. Local life balances agriculture, hospitality and services for outdoor recreation. Graubünden is a trilingual canton and the area shows German and Romansh place names; Bergün is also known by its Romansh name, Bravuogn.

Geography and transport

Bergün Filisur occupies valley floors, steep slopes and side valleys typical of the Albula region, with forests, pastures and high country used for summer grazing. The territory is crossed by the Rhaetian Railway, a heritage-rich alpine rail network often celebrated for its engineering and scenery; visitors follow this line to admire viaducts and mountain views and to reach local trailheads. For rail and visitor information consult links on the Rhaetian line and regional tourism pages such as Rhaetian Railway resources.

History and administration

The 2018 merger brought together municipal services to improve planning and infrastructure across a wider area while retaining local identity in each village. Historically the settlements served pastoralism, transit routes and small-scale crafts; modern governance emphasises sustainable tourism, heritage preservation and maintaining mountain roads and facilities.

Culture, recreation and notable features

  • Outdoor activities: hiking, mountain biking and winter sports in nearby uplands and passes.
  • Heritage rail and scenic travel: viaducts, tunnels and panoramic trains are frequent attractions.
  • Village life: traditional festivals, alpine farming, local cuisine and crafts contribute to cultural continuity.
