The American Forces Network (AFN) is the United States Department of Defense broadcast service that delivers radio and television programming to U.S. military personnel, civilian employees and their families stationed outside the United States and to crews aboard U.S. Navy vessels. AFN traces its roots to early wartime radio efforts and now distributes contemporary news, sports, entertainment and information programming intended for English-speaking American audiences abroad. Radio and television are its primary delivery formats.
Origins and development
AFN grew out of the need to keep service members informed and entertained away from home. Established during World War II, the organization expanded through the Cold War and subsequent conflicts, adapting from shortwave and AM broadcasts to FM, cable-like low-power television, satellite feeds and internet streaming. It evolved administratively under the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) and later adopted the American Forces Network brand for on-base broadcasting and public-facing services.
Services and programming
Programming mixes U.S. commercial network shows, original news and sports coverage, and military-oriented information and announcements. AFN produces live and recorded news bulletins focused on service members and global events, transmits major American sporting events when rights allow, and airs popular movies and series selected for an international audience. Because of licensing and host-nation regulations, some content is edited or replaced with alternative programming.
- Terrestrial AM/FM and low-power television transmitters on bases and installations.
- Satellite distribution to remote stations and ships at sea.
- Streaming services and digital platforms for authenticated users.
AFN serves a wide variety of listeners and viewers including soldiers, sailors, airmen and other service members, as well as DoD civilians and family members. Its workforce combines military personnel, civilian employees and contractors who handle news production, technical operations and local station management.
