Fear is the fourth solo studio album by Welsh multi-instrumentalist John Cale. Issued in October 1974, it was his first full-length record released through the Island Records label.

Background

Following a string of solo and collaborative projects, Cale entered the mid-1970s with a desire to blend rock structures and experimental touches. Fear was recorded and completed in 1974 and represented a new phase in his career, being the first of his long-players to appear on Island. The move to the label gave him access to different production resources and distribution than his earlier releases.

Music and themes

The album juxtaposes direct, guitar- and piano-driven rock with moments that draw on avant-garde textures. Cale's arrangements often place spare instrumentation and vocal delivery at the forefront, while the lyrics explore tense, intimate, and sometimes unsettling subject matter. The record is frequently noted for its contrast between muscular rock passages and quieter, more atmospheric sections.

Release and critical view

Fear was released in October 1974. Contemporary and retrospective listeners have cited it as an important entry in Cale's catalogue for the way it balances accessibility with experimental instincts. Over time the album has been discussed in profiles and histories of Cale's work as a transitional record that helped shape his direction through the remainder of the 1970s.

Track information and formats

The original release was issued as a full-length vinyl LP. Subsequent reissues and compilations have made the album more widely available on CD and digital formats. Track listings and bonus material vary between editions; consult label reissue notes or discographic sources for details on particular pressings.
