Overview

Everett is a city on the coastal plain of Puget Sound in the state of Washington, in the Snohomish County region of the United States. It serves as the county seat and is home to a population of just over one hundred thousand people. The municipality combines waterfront areas, industrial zones and residential neighborhoods and functions as a regional center for commerce, transportation and cultural activities.

Economy and industry

The local economy is anchored by aerospace and maritime sectors. The large manufacturing campus operated by Boeing in Everett has produced several of the company’s widebody airliners and other large aircraft. Historically and in recent decades, models such as the 747 and the 787 have been associated with assembly at this site. The Boeing facility is notable for its very large assembly buildings and heavy industrial infrastructure.

Everett’s deepwater port and marina serve commercial shipping, fishing and recreational boating. The city also hosts a United States Navy base, Naval Station Everett, which contributes to the local economy and to regional maritime operations. Healthcare, education and small- to medium-sized businesses round out employment opportunities.

History and development

Founded in the late 19th century as part of Puget Sound’s broader settlement and development, Everett grew with rail, timber and shipping industries before transforming into an industrial and aerospace center in the 20th century. Urban redevelopment in waterfront and downtown areas has aimed to balance new residential and cultural uses with the city’s working-port character.
