The locality was typical of many small French villages: a compact village centre, agricultural surroundings, and local public buildings such as a town hall and parish church. Like most French communes, Évaillé had its origins in post-Revolutionary local government structures. In the 2010s and later, national policies encouraged mergers of small communes to form more sustainable administrative units. The merger that created Val-d'Étangson was intended to pool services, simplify governance and strengthen local development while preserving local identity.
