Overview
Estahban County (Persian: شهرستان استهبان) is an administrative county in Fars Province in southern Iran. Located within the cultural and historical region of Persia, the county serves as a local center of agriculture and trade. The county seat and largest town is Estahban. The area is part of the national framework of counties and districts referenced in Iranian administrative divisions (county).
Geography and climate
The landscape of Estahban County combines low rolling hills and plains with patches of cultivated land. The climate is generally semi-arid, with hot, dry summers and cooler winters; local microclimates created by elevation and irrigation support orchards and dry-farmed crops. These conditions shape settlement patterns and the types of crops that thrive in the region.
Administration and population
Administratively the county is divided into two districts (bakhsh): the Central District and Runiz District. According to the 2006 census the county had a population of 66,391 people in 16,606 families. Urban centers within the county include three cities: Estahban, Ij, and Runiz. These towns function as local hubs for services, markets and government functions for surrounding villages.
Economy and agriculture
Agriculture is the primary economic activity. Estahban is especially noted across Iran for its fig production; the county's figs are a prominent local product and contribute to both domestic markets and regional trade. Other crops and horticulture, local livestock, and small-scale processing and crafts complement the agricultural base.
History, culture and importance
While not as widely known internationally as larger Fars cities, Estahban County shares in the deep historical and cultural traditions of the Fars region. Local customs, festivals tied to agricultural seasons, and community life in the towns and villages reflect long-settled rural patterns. The county plays a role in regional food supply and preserves vernacular architecture and crafts typical of southern Iran.
