Overview

Erling Brøndum (11 July 1930 – 4 August 2017) was a Danish journalist and politician known for a long career in regional newspapers and a brief period as Denmark's Minister of Defence. His path combined editorial leadership with a short stint in national government during the 1970s. He is remembered for rising quickly in the press and for returning to journalism after public service.

Early life and journalism career

Brøndum began his professional life in reporting at Bornholms Tidende, the local daily serving the Danish island of Bornholm. He attracted notice early: at the age of 26 he was appointed chief editor of the paper, a senior role he held for fourteen years. His work was rooted in regional coverage and newspaper management at a time when local dailies were central to community life in Denmark. After leaving Bornholms Tidende he joined the staff of Horsens Folkeblad, another regional publication, continuing as a working editor and journalist.

Political appointment

In 1973 Brøndum was appointed Minister of Defence in the cabinet led by Poul Hartling. His appointment brought a career newspaperman into a ministry responsible for national defence policy, military administration and Denmark's international defence commitments. He served in that ministerial role until 1975, a period that coincided with the short-lived Hartling government. Brøndum then stepped down from the ministry and returned to journalism.

Return to journalism and later life

After leaving the government, Brøndum resumed his newspaper career, working again with Horsens Folkeblad and later with the Aalborg Stiftstidende, a major regional paper in northern Jutland. He continued to be associated with regional press institutions and the practical business of newspaper editing and reporting rather than pursuing a prolonged national political career.
