Daniel Eric Kent OAM (30 June 1919 – 26 April 2019) was an Australian Labor Party politician who represented constituents in the upper house of Victoria's parliament. His parliamentary service was split across two periods and two provinces: Gippsland Province from 1970 to 1976, and Chelsea Province from 1979 to 1985. He lived to the age of 99 and received the Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of his contributions to public life. Profile

Political career

Kent was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, the state parliament's upper chamber, which reviews legislation and represents regional and metropolitan interests. He first entered the Council in 1970 as the representative for Gippsland Province, an area with largely rural and regional communities. After leaving the chamber in 1976, he returned in 1979 to represent Chelsea Province, which covered suburban districts, serving until 1985. His non-consecutive terms illustrate a multi-stage career in state politics and a capacity to serve different types of electorates under the Labor banner. Labor Party

Background and recognition

Kent was born in Areegra, Victoria, a small community in the state's agricultural regions, and his life spanned much of the 20th century and into the 21st. He was formally recognized with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), an honour that acknowledges significant service to the community or to public office. Details of his pre-parliamentary occupation and local activities contributed to his profile as a community representative. Areegra Australia

Legacy and significance

Kent's career is representative of mid- to late-20th century state politics in Victoria, when local and regional concerns were frequently carried into legislative debates by upper-house members. He served during an era of changing social and economic priorities and participated in the routine duties of an upper-house parliamentarian: scrutinising bills, representing constituent interests, and contributing to committee work. His long life and the award of the OAM mark him as a notable local political figure in Victorian history.
