Overview
Epesses was a small lakeside village in Switzerland, located on the northern shore of Lake Geneva. Administratively it belonged to the canton of Vaud and was part of the district of Lavaux-Oron. The settlement is best known for its vineyards carved into steep slopes above the lake and for a long local tradition of wine production. On 1 July 2011 Epesses joined neighboring communities to form the new municipality of Bourg-en-Lavaux, a change intended to streamline services and local administration.
Geography and landscape
Epesses occupies a narrow strip between the lakeshore and the rising hills behind it. The cultivated terraces that define the village landscape were shaped over many centuries and remain a dominant visual and economic feature. The vineyard terraces of the wider Lavaux area are recognised as a cultural landscape for the way human activity adapted slopes for intensive viticulture, offering panoramic views across the lake to the Alps on clear days.
Viticulture and economy
Viticulture has long been the mainstay of Epesses. Small, family-owned vineyards and local cooperatives produce mainly white wines characteristic of the region; the chill of the lake and the south-facing terraces favour varieties that give light, fresh wines. Wine-growing, harvest work, cellar production and wine-related tourism — tasting rooms, trails through the vines and guided visits — continue to sustain the local economy alongside services for residents.
History and local administration
The village has medieval origins and developed under the influence of local seigneuries and ecclesiastical landholders, like many communities in Vaud. Its built environment includes traditional farmhouse structures adapted to steep terrain and small presses once used for local vinification. In 2011 the former municipalities of Cully, Epesses, Grandvaux, Riex and Villette (Lavaux) merged to form Bourg-en-Lavaux, bringing together administrative functions while keeping each village's cultural identity.
Culture, tourism and access
Despite its modest size, Epesses attracts walkers and wine tourists who follow marked paths along the terraces, visit local cellars and enjoy views of the lake. Seasonal events and small local exhibitions present agricultural traditions and village history. The area is accessible by regional roads and public transport along the lakeshore; connections by train and boat link the Lavaux villages to larger towns and transport hubs in Switzerland, making day visits straightforward for travelers.
