East Division (NHL, 1967–1974)

Composition and characteristics

Members of the East Division were the long-standing, often-called "Original Six" teams that provided much of the league's history and rivalry. These clubs were noted for deep-rooted rivalries, larger markets in some cases, and a strong record of postseason success during the era.

History and development

The division was a product of the NHL's first major expansion in 1967. The split into East and West reflected both competitive and logistical choices: it placed the established clubs together to preserve existing rivalries and separated the expansion franchises into their own group. The East Division format governed regular-season scheduling and provided the framework for playoff qualification throughout its existence. In 1974 the league abandoned the two-division arrangement in favor of a multi-division conference system, dissolving the original East Division.

Significance and legacy

The East Division era is often remembered for its concentration of historic franchises and intense rivalries. Teams from this division won many championships in that period and carried forward traditions that shaped future NHL alignments. The label "East Division" has appeared at other times in NHL history — most recently in a temporary realignment decades later — but those later uses were distinct reorganizations from the 1967–74 configuration.
