Almena is a small city in Norton County, in northwestern Kansas, United States. As recorded in the 2010 census, 408 people lived there. Typical of many communities on the High Plains, Almena functions as a home base for surrounding farms and ranches and retains the scale and character of a rural Midwestern town.

History and development

The town grew during the period of westward settlement and agricultural expansion in the late 19th century, when rail and road links encouraged establishment of small service centers. Like similar Kansas towns, Almena developed around grain trade, local commerce and institutions such as schools and churches that anchored community life.

Geography and climate

Almena sits on the High Plains, an area of relatively flat to gently rolling land used mainly for dryland farming and livestock. The climate is continental, with warm to hot summers and cold winters; precipitation is modest and seasonal, often concentrated in spring and early summer.

Economy and community

The local economy is centered on agriculture—grain and cattle production—and on businesses that provide goods and services to nearby rural residents. Community features typically include a public school or consolidated district, churches, small retailers, and civic organizations that support events and volunteer services.

Notable features and transportation

  • Serves as a rural hub for surrounding farms and ranches.
  • Historic Main Street character and agricultural infrastructure such as grain elevators.
  • Connected regionally by county roads and state highways; rail service has historically influenced settlement patterns.
