Alistair Murdoch "Ally" McCoist, MBE (born 24 September 1962 in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire) is a Scottish former professional footballer, manager and television personality. He made his name as a prolific centre‑forward in Scottish football and remains widely recognised for his long association with Rangers Football Club. After retiring as a player he moved into coaching and media work, becoming one of Scotland's best known football voices.

Playing career and clubs

McCoist began his senior career in the late 1970s and played professionally for several clubs in Scotland and England. His early years were with St Johnstone before a move to Sunderland. He returned to Scotland to join Rangers, where he spent the majority of his playing career and became the club's leading goalscorer. He finished his playing days with a spell at Kilmarnock. Across more than two decades on the pitch he was known for his finishing, intelligent movement and consistency in front of goal.

Records and playing style

At Rangers McCoist established himself as the club's record goalscorer, a tally often cited at 355 goals in all competitions, and he ranks among the club's most capped players with well over 500 appearances. He is also recognised as one of the highest scorers in the history of the Scottish top flight, having scored nearly three hundred top‑tier goals across his spells with St Johnstone, Rangers and Kilmarnock. His attributes included clinical finishing inside the penalty area, a strong understanding of timing and position, and an ability to score in big matches.

Managerial and media career

After retiring as a player McCoist entered coaching and went on to manage Rangers in the early 2010s, returning to the club in a leadership role during a turbulent period. Outside management he developed a substantial broadcasting profile: he has worked as a television presenter and pundit, appearing on football programmes and covering domestic and international matches. His media work made him a familiar face to viewers across the UK and furthered his reputation beyond purely sporting circles.
