Donga Department (Benin)

Geography and climate

The terrain combines open savanna, gallery forests and low hills. The climate is tropical savanna, with a pronounced rainy season and a dry season influenced by Harmattan winds. Rivers and seasonal streams support local agriculture and pastoralism.

Administration and population

Donga was created during Benin's administrative reorganization at the end of the 20th century and is governed by a prefect appointed by the national government, together with locally elected municipal councils. Communes in the department include:

• Djougou (capital)
• Bassila
• Copargo
• Ouaké

The population is ethnically diverse, with a range of local languages spoken alongside French, the national language of administration and education.

Economy and transport

Agriculture is the main economic activity: farmers grow staples such as cassava, yams, maize and vegetables, and raise livestock. Local markets in Djougou and other towns act as regional trade centres. Road links connect the department to neighbouring regions and to cross-border trade routes.

History, culture and significance

Like much of northern Benin, Donga has a history shaped by pre-colonial societies, French colonial administration and post-independence development. Traditional festivals, artisanal crafts and weekly markets remain important to social life. The department plays a significant role in providing food crops and in preserving regional cultural traditions.
