The Division of Fadden is an Australian federal electoral division in the state of Queensland. Established in 1977, it is one of the constituencies represented in the House of Representatives and is formally classified as an Australian Electoral Division. The division takes its name from Sir Arthur Fadden, who served briefly as Prime Minister of Australia in 1941.

Geography and boundaries

Fadden lies on the northern edge of the Gold Coast region and includes a mixture of coastal suburbs, inland residential areas and small patches of industrial and commercial land. The division stretches across suburbs that border the Broadwater and parts of southern Moreton Bay, and it includes several islands in those waterways. Over time its boundaries have shifted through electoral redistributions to reflect population change and urban growth.

Suburbs and notable places

The division today covers many well-known suburban communities on the northern Gold Coast, including:

  • Alberton, Arundel, Biggera Waters, Coombabah
  • Coomera, Gaven, Gilberton, Helensvale
  • Hollywell, Hope Island, Jacobs Well, Labrador
  • Molendinar, Norwell, Paradise Point, Parkwood
  • Runaway Bay, Stapylton, Steiglitz, Woongoolba
  • Parts of Ormeau, Oxenford, Pacific Pines, Pimpama and Southport

The division also contains South Stradbroke Island and other small islands located in the Broadwater and southern Moreton Bay, making coastal management and marine environments part of local concerns.

History and development

When created in 1977 the Division of Fadden covered a larger swath of territory that extended south of Brisbane, but subsequent boundary redistributions concentrated the seat on the growing northern Gold Coast urban area. Population growth, new housing estates and infrastructure development in the Gold Coast corridor have been important factors shaping the division’s modern form.

Character and significance

Fadden combines residential suburbs, tourist-oriented and coastal precincts, and pockets of light industry and retail. Transport routes such as the Pacific Motorway and coastal roads connect many communities within the electorate. Local issues commonly include urban planning, transport provision, coastal and environmental management, and services for a diverse population that ranges from long-term residents to recent arrivals seeking housing on the Gold Coast fringe.

As a named federal electorate, Fadden is part of the broader pattern of representation for Queensland in the Australian parliament and contributes to national debate through its elected member.
