Dimitris Sioufas

Early life and professional background

Sioufas trained and worked as a lawyer before entering national politics. His legal background informed his parliamentary work and committee participation. He first won a seat in the Hellenic Parliament in the 1981 general election for the Karditsa constituency and was subsequently re‑elected in multiple successive elections, serving as a senior figure within his party and parliamentary delegations.

Political career and offices

During his parliamentary tenure Sioufas held several executive and presiding roles. He served as Deputy Minister of Social Security (August 1991–December 1992) and then as Minister of Health, Welfare and Social Services (December 1992–October 1993). In the later stage of his career he was elected Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, a position he occupied from 2007 to 2009, presiding over debates and representing the assembly in official functions (Hellenic Parliament).
