Overview

Dibër County is one of Albania's twelve counties, located in the northeastern part of the country. Its administrative seat is Peshkopi, a regional town known for mountain scenery and local services. The county occupies a largely mountainous area that forms part of the border zone with North Macedonia and combines rural settlements, mineral resources and traditional agriculture. For a general reference see Dibër County.

Geography and environment

The landscape includes high peaks, deep valleys and river corridors. Mount Korab, the highest peak along the Albania–North Macedonia border, dominates the skyline and is a focal point for hikers. The region is drained by parts of the Drin river system and the Mat basin, offering varied habitats from alpine meadows to forested slopes. Climate ranges from continental in the valleys to alpine at higher elevation. Coordinates commonly given for the county center are 41°35′N 20°15′E.

Administrative divisions

Historically the county encompassed three districts: Bulqizë, Dibër and Mat. Local government reforms have altered municipal structures, but these names remain useful for describing local identity and economic patterns. The capital, Peshkopi, is the principal service and market center for the surrounding rural communities.

Economy and infrastructure

The economy blends small-scale farming, livestock rearing, forestry and mining. Bulqizë is especially associated with chromite and other mineral extraction, while valleys support orchards and cereal production. Transport links are modest: regional roads connect towns and cross-border routes lead eastward. Public services are concentrated in Peshkopi and a few larger settlements.

History, culture and tourism

Dibër has long-standing cultural connections with the broader Dibër/Debar region on both sides of the modern border. Traditional music, festivals and rural crafts persist alongside newer economic activities. Visitors come for mountain hiking, alpine scenery, and local traditions; thermal springs and mountain trails near Peshkopi are local attractions. The county's border position and rugged terrain have shaped its identity and development through recent centuries.

Notable facts

  • The area is among Albania's more mountainous and less densely populated counties.
  • Mount Korab is the highest point on the Albania–North Macedonia border and an important landmark for the region.
  • Mining, particularly in Bulqizë, plays a disproportionately large role in the local economy compared with many coastal areas.
