Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan, the ship combines the amenities expected of contemporary cruise vessels: a mix of passenger cabins, public dining venues, entertainment spaces, and crew areas. The vessel has been associated with two publicly reported infectious disease outbreaks. In 2016 a norovirus gastroenteritis outbreak affected passengers and was handled per standard sanitation and outbreak-response procedures; reports at the time described efforts to contain transmission and to sanitize affected areas (norovirus report). In early 2020, the ship drew international attention when a COVID-19 outbreak occurred while she was quarantined off Yokohama. On that voyage there were 3,711 passengers and crew aboard; publicly reported figures indicate at least 712 laboratory-confirmed infections among those on board and multiple fatalities, and the event prompted scrutiny of shipboard quarantine measures and global public-health responses (COVID-19 reports).

The 2020 incident in particular influenced industry practices and regulatory guidance concerning disease prevention, passenger screening and contingency planning for cruise operations.
