Devoll District (Albania)

Former administrative district in southeastern Albania, named for the Devoll River. Centered on Bilisht, noted for agriculture, river valley geography and hydropower development within Korçë County.

The Devoll District is a historical administrative area in southeastern Albania, centered on the town of Bilisht. It takes its name from the Devoll River, which drains a fertile valley that has shaped local settlement and land use. Although Albania's administrative divisions have changed over time, the name and territory of Devoll remain commonly used to describe this distinct local region within Korçë County.

Geography and population

Devoll occupies a valley landscape with mixed lowland and hilly terrain. The river corridor supports irrigated agriculture and settlements concentrated along transport routes. Population figures have varied with different censuses; estimates put the district's inhabitants at roughly 34,000 in recent decades, with Bilisht functioning as the main urban center and service hub for surrounding villages.

History and name

The district's name derives directly from the Devoll River, a long watercourse that has been important for irrigation, local trade and travel since antiquity. The administrative unit known as the District of Devoll was one of the thirty-six districts used in Albania's former territorial organization. Later reforms reorganized national sub‑divisions into larger counties and municipalities, but the historical district remains a useful reference for geography and local identity.

Economy and infrastructure

Traditional economic activity in Devoll is agricultural: cereal crops, vegetables and livestock grazing are widespread. The river valley has attracted infrastructure projects, including river regulation and hydropower initiatives, which have aimed to harness water resources for energy and irrigation. Roads link Bilisht to other towns in Korçë County, supporting markets and seasonal labour movement.

Administration and notable facts

  • Capital: Bilisht, the district's principal town and administrative center.
  • Natural feature: The Devoll River, central to the valley's landscape and economy.
  • Contemporary status: Recognised as part of Korçë County under Albania's newer administrative framework.

Devoll's combination of riverine geography, agricultural traditions and recent infrastructure development make it a representative area of southeastern Albania, retaining local cultural practices while adapting to broader economic changes.
