Overview
Deschutes County lies in the interior of the U.S. state of Oregon. The county combines high desert plateaus and the western slopes of the Cascade Range. According to the 2010 census, the population was 157,733, and the county seat is designated as the county seat in Bend. In recent decades the area has been one of Oregon's fastest-growing regions.
Geography and environment
Deschutes County spans varied landscapes: basalt plateaus and juniper-studded high desert to the east, volcanic peaks and dense forests to the west. The Deschutes River and a chain of alpine and volcanic lakes define much of the county's water system. Mount Bachelor and the Cascade Lakes offer seasonal snow and alpine recreation, while nearby volcanic features include the Newberry Volcano and lava fields.
History and development
Formally established in the early 20th century, the county grew from ranching, logging and railroad-linked settlement. Over the late 20th and early 21st centuries Bend and surrounding communities shifted toward tourism, outdoor recreation, and service industries. Many visitors are drawn by winter sports, rafting, fishing and scenic access to central Oregon's volcanic terrain.
Communities and economy
Major population centers include Bend, Redmond, Sisters and La Pine, along with resort areas such as Sunriver. The local economy blends recreation and hospitality, construction and real estate during growth periods, a legacy of timber and wood products, plus medical, retail and small technology firms. Craft brewing and outdoor-gear businesses are notable in the Bend metropolitan area.
Recreation and notable sites
The county is a regional hub for mountain biking, downhill and cross-country skiing, fly-fishing, hiking and boating. Key attractions are Mount Bachelor ski area, the Cascade Lakes, Newberry National Volcanic Monument and Tumalo Falls. Cultural resources include museums, galleries and an active craft-brewing scene that contributes to local tourism.
Government and services
Local governance follows the county system common in Oregon, with elected officials and a board of commissioners overseeing land use, roads, public safety and social services. County planning has focused on balancing development pressures with conservation of water, open space and wildlife habitat as the region adapts to population growth.
