Overview

Del Norte County sits at the far northwest tip of the U.S. state of California, where the coastline meets the border with Oregon and the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The county is a relatively small, rural jurisdiction by population; the 2010 census recorded 28,610 residents. The county government is centered in its only incorporated city, Crescent City, which also serves as the county seat. For more general information, see the county listing at Del Norte County.

Geography and natural environment

Del Norte combines steep, foggy coastline, river valleys, and dense temperate redwood forest. The coastline and lowland rivers support a maritime climate with cool summers and abundant rainfall, conditions that sustain old-growth redwoods and a range of coastal ecosystems. Parts of the county are included in protected areas and national parks that attract visitors for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

History and people

The county was organized on March 2, 1857. Long before European settlement, the area was home to indigenous peoples, including the Tolowa, whose cultural ties remain present today. Later waves of settlement were tied to maritime trade, fishing, and an economy built on timber and natural resources.

Economy, communities and demographics

The local economy has historically depended on timber, commercial fishing and related maritime activities, along with seasonal and year-round tourism linked to the coast and redwood forests. Crescent City is the population and service center; much of the rest of the county is sparsely populated, with small unincorporated communities and rural land uses. Demographic statistics and trends are recorded by the U.S. Census.

Transportation, parks and attractions

U.S. Highway 101 is the main north–south route through Del Norte, connecting local towns to other coastal communities. Notable natural and historic attractions include parts of the coastal redwood parks, scenic river corridors, and maritime landmarks such as the historic Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City. The county is a gateway for outdoor recreation, from salmon and steelhead fisheries to hiking among large redwoods.

Government and services

Del Norte is administered by a county board and provides standard local services from its seat in Crescent City and through county departments.
