Career overview

Harney began his footballing journey in the youth system of Sunderland before moving into senior football. He is best known for his time in the Football League with Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United and Brentford, clubs that competed professionally in the English league structure during his era. After his league spells he continued playing at non-league level with sides including Wimbledon and Bromley.

Playing style and role

As a forward, Harney occupied attacking positions and was involved in goal-scoring and build-up play. Contemporary reports and team line-ups from the period indicate he operated in roles typical of forwards of the 1960s: supporting centre-forwards, making runs behind defenders and participating in set-piece situations. While not a household name nationally, he contributed to the squads he joined and provided depth in attacking areas.

Historical context and significance

Harney's career took place during a transitional era for English football, a decade marked by tactical shifts and the continued professionalization of lower-league clubs. Players like Harney—moving between league and non-league teams—illustrate the permeability of the English system and the importance of regional clubs in sustaining professional careers beyond the top division.

  • Sunderland (youth development)
  • Grimsby Town (first senior Football League appearances)
  • Scunthorpe United (continued league involvement)

David Harney's passing was reported in early May 2019. His career is a reminder of the many professional players whose steady contributions at league and non-league levels form the backbone of English football history, and whose stories are preserved in club records, match programmes and local histories.
