Overview
Dasht is a town and administrative tehsil in Kharan District in the western part of Balochistan, Pakistan. The name "Dasht" derives from Persian and Urdu, meaning a plain or desert, and is used for several settlements across the region. The locality serves as a local centre for surrounding villages and pastoral areas.
Location and physical geography
The town is located at approximately 28°36′30″N 66°18′50″E with an elevation near 1,796 metres (about 5,895 feet). It lies on the arid plateaus of western Balochistan, where terrain ranges from rocky hills to broad, sparsely vegetated plains. The elevation produces relatively cool nights compared with lower coastal districts.
Climate and environment
Dasht experiences an arid to semi‑arid climate: hot, dry summers and cool winters with wide diurnal temperature swings. Vegetation is limited and much of the land is used for extensive grazing rather than intensive agriculture. Water resources are scarce and traditionally rely on wells, seasonal streams and small-scale irrigation where available.
Administration and population
As the administrative seat of a tehsil, Dasht provides basic government services and local markets for neighboring settlements. According to the 1998 census, the tehsil had a population of about 58,621; more recent official counts are not provided here. Local governance follows the district and provincial structures of Balochistan.
Economy and transport
The local economy is dominated by livestock rearing, smallholder agriculture in irrigated pockets, and trade. Road links connect Dasht to other towns in Kharan District and to regional highways, but transport infrastructure can be limited and travel times are affected by seasonal conditions.
History, distinctions and notable facts
Dasht has a longstanding role as a rural administrative and market centre rather than a large urban hub. It should not be confused with other settlements named Dasht elsewhere in Balochistan (for example in the Kech/Turbat area), which are distinct in location and environment. The town illustrates common features of inland Balochistan settlements: aridity, pastoral livelihoods and a dispersed settlement pattern.
