Darab County is a county in the eastern part of Fars Province in Iran. The county seat and largest city is Darab. In Persian the county is referred to as شهرستان داراب. According to the 2006 national census the population recorded was 172,938 people in 39,955 families; later censuses and estimates have shown demographic change in the following decades.

Geography and climate

Darab County lies where the southern Iranian plateau begins to give way to lower plains and foothills. The landscape includes irrigated agricultural plains, seasonal rivers and higher ground toward the Zagros foothills. The climate is generally semi-arid to arid with hot summers and cool winters; irrigation and groundwater have long shaped local settlement and farming patterns.

Administrative divisions

The county is subdivided into three districts (bakhsh): the Central District, Rostaq District and Forg District. Administratively it contains four recognized cities and numerous villages. Major urban centers include:

These divisions structure local government, municipal services and rural councils, and are used for census and planning purposes (administrative unit).

History and heritage

The area around Darab has a long history of human settlement and trade. Local tradition and archaeological remains point to occupation in antiquity and through the medieval period; some sites near the county seat relate to the broader historical landscape of Fars Province. Cultural landmarks and historic ruins are part of the county’s identity and attract regional interest.

Economy, society and land use

Darab County’s economy is largely agricultural. Farmers cultivate citrus, grains and orchard crops where irrigation is available, and pastoral activities occur on drier land. Local markets in the county towns serve surrounding villages; traditional crafts and small-scale commerce complement farming. Social life combines rural village customs with the administrative and commercial role of the county towns.
