Design and criteria

In function, the Cross of Valour recognizes individual deeds of valor on the battlefield rather than long service or merit in other fields. It may be awarded more than once to the same person; additional presentations are indicated by devices added to the ribbon. The decoration is typically given for direct participation in combat or for repeated demonstrations of bravery under fire.

History and development

The decoration was established during the tumultuous period following Poland's restoration of independence and was first issued in 1920. It saw extensive use during the Polish–Soviet War, the campaigns of the 1939 defensive war, and throughout World War II by units both inside occupied Poland and among Polish forces fighting alongside Allies. The Cross continued to exist through subsequent political changes and was awarded in later conflicts and operations involving Polish troops.

Recipients have included regular army personnel, volunteers, members of underground formations and allied soldiers serving with Polish units. The medal has served both as a personal honor and as a tool of morale, publicly acknowledging courage in the most dangerous situations.
