Overview

Courlevon was a small administrative community that until 2016 functioned as a separate municipality in the district See (French: Lac) within the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It lay in the language border region where cultural and linguistic influences from both German- and French-speaking Switzerland are visible in place names and local life.

Characteristics

The area around Courlevon featured rural landscape typical of the region: mixed farmland, small settlements and road links to nearby towns. Local architecture and community institutions reflected the canton’s bilingual character. Administratively it formed part of the See/Lac district and was governed under cantonal regulations for small municipalities, with local councils handling everyday services until its merger.

History and administrative change

Like many small Swiss municipalities, Courlevon underwent an administrative consolidation. On 1 January 2016 the former communes of Courlevon and its neighbors Jeuss, Lurtigen and Salvenach were merged into the larger municipality of Murten/Morat. The decision followed cantonal procedures intended to improve the efficiency of local services and strengthen municipal finances.

Local importance and legacy

Although no longer an independent municipality, Courlevon’s identity persists in local place names, family histories and cadastral records. Its incorporation into Murten/Morat aimed to provide residents with broader access to services while preserving local traditions. Maps, historical registers and community events continue to mark the former municipality’s boundaries and heritage.
