Clinamen is a classical philosophical concept describing a spontaneous, tiny deviation in the straight motion of atoms. The idea appears prominently in Lucretius's poem De Rerum Natura, where he uses the term to account for collisions, the formation of bodies, and the emergence of complex things. The clinamen was proposed as a way to introduce contingency into an otherwise mechanical universe.

As an explanatory device, the clinamen served several purposes: it explained why atoms collide and aggregate rather than pass by one another; it broke the chain of strict causal determinism in order to allow moral responsibility; and it countered theological claims that everything was ordained. Classical sources describe the swerve as primitive, qualitative, and intentionally nonspecific rather than a measured physical hypothesis.

In later thought the clinamen has been taken up as a metaphor and a technical term. Literary critics and theorists have adapted it to describe creative deviation, while some scholars note superficial resemblances to modern notions of indeterminacy. However, the ancient clinamen is not a scientific theory in the modern sense and should not be equated directly with contemporary concepts such as randomness in quantum physics or formal chaos theory.
