Alaskacephale is a small pachycephalosaurid dinosaur from Late Cretaceous Alaska, named in 2006. Known from fragmentary cranial remains, it informs high-latitude dinosaur diversity and palaeobiogeography.

Alaskacephale is a genus of pachycephalosaurid dinosaur that lived in what is now northern Alaska during the Late Cretaceous, roughly between 80 and 69 million years ago. It is represented by limited, primarily cranial fossil material and is interpreted as a small, bipedal ornithischian distinguished by its thickened skull roof — a hallmark of pachycephalosaurs. The taxon was formally named by Robert Sullivan in 2006 and contributes to our understanding of dinosaur faunas at high latitudes.

Discovery and naming

The fossils attributed to Alaskacephale were recovered from high-latitude deposits in northern North America. Because remains are fragmentary they preserve mainly parts of the skull roof and dome, which is the most diagnostic portion for pachycephalosaur classification. The genus name reflects its Alaskan provenance and its membership in the dome-headed pachycephalosaur group.

Description and biology

Pachycephalosaurs are best known for their thickened cranial domes, and Alaskacephale conforms to this general pattern though the available material is incomplete. These animals were small, bipedal herbivores or omnivores with leaf-shaped teeth and relatively short forelimbs. Their domes may have been used in visual display, species recognition, or intraspecific combat, but the precise function remains debated among paleontologists.

Size and comparisons

Alaskacephale is smaller than some of the largest members of its family. It has been estimated at about half the size of Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis and roughly three quarters the size of Prenocephale. It is comparable in size to taxa sometimes referred to as "Prenocephale" edmontonensis and to Foraminacephale. These comparisons help place Alaskacephale within the size range and diversity of Late Cretaceous pachycephalosaurids.

Alaskacephale is important for several reasons: it documents the presence of dome-headed dinosaurs at high latitudes, indicating that pachycephalosaurs inhabited polar or near-polar environments. Classification within the family remains provisional because of the fragmentary nature of the fossils, and additional material would be needed to refine its relationships.
