Overview
Chitrakoot Division is an administrative grouping in the southern part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, named for the historic Chitrakoot area. The division lies within the larger Bundelkhand region and forms part of the central Indian landscape of plateaus and low hills. It is one of several divisions used by state government to coordinate administration across multiple districts within India.
Constituent districts and administration
The division contains multiple districts, commonly listed as Banda, Chitrakoot and Mahoba. These districts are grouped for purposes such as revenue administration, law and order, regional planning and delivery of state services. A divisional commissioner and related offices provide coordination between district authorities and the state government.
Geography and climate
Chitrakoot Division sits on the Bundelkhand plateau, characterized by undulating terrain, rocky outcrops and seasonal rivers. The climate tends to be semi-arid with distinct dry and monsoon seasons; agriculture relies on a mix of rainfed cropping and limited irrigation where available. The division borders the state of Madhya Pradesh in places, and transport links connect it with nearby regional centers.
History, culture and notable sites
The name Chitrakoot is associated with stories from the Hindu epic tradition, and the region attracts pilgrims to sites associated with Lord Rama’s exile. Important cultural and religious places include pilgrimage ghats, temples and hills regarded as sacred. Visitors and scholars also note local folk traditions, festivals and heritage structures that reflect Bundelkhand’s history.
Economy and contemporary issues
The regional economy is largely agrarian, with dryland farming, pulses and other staples where rainfall permits. Small-scale industries, stone and mineral extraction, and local crafts contribute to livelihoods. Like much of Bundelkhand, the division faces development challenges such as water stress, periodic drought, and the need for infrastructure and livelihood diversification.
