Political career and offices

Bertrand combined local and national responsibilities over several decades. He was elected mayor of Mende, the prefecture of Lozère, and held that office from 2008 to 2016. In 2012 he won election to the French Senate as the representative for the department of Lozère, and he remained in that role until his death in 2020. Earlier he served at regional level as a vice‑president of the council of Languedoc‑Roussillon from 2004 to 2011.

Affiliations and political stance

For much of his career Bertrand was a member of the Socialist Party (PS). Later, reflecting broader realignments in French politics during the 2010s, he moved his affiliation towards La République En Marche (LREM). His work combined attention to rural issues, local services and the administrative duties of elected office.
