Chaillé-sous-les-Ormeaux is a former French commune located in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire. Historically an independent municipality, it is described in administrative records as a former commune and appears on regional maps of Pays de la Loire and the wider area of Vendée in western France.

The commune lost its administrative independence on 1 January 2016, when it was merged with neighbouring municipalities to form the new commune called Rives-de-l'Yon. This change was part of a broader national programme encouraging the consolidation of small communes to improve public services and administrative efficiency while preserving local identity.

Geography and place

Located inland in the Vendée department, the area around Chaillé-sous-les-Ormeaux is typical of western France's gentle rural landscape: a mix of agricultural fields, hedgerows and small woodlands. The place name includes "sous-les-Ormeaux," literally "under the elms," a reference to traditional tree-lined features found in many villages. The departmental capital, La Roche-sur-Yon, serves as the main urban centre for the surrounding communes.

Character and local life

As with many small French communes, community life historically centred on the village church, the mairie (town hall) and seasonal fairs. The local economy has relied largely on agriculture, small-scale commerce and services for residents. Rural tourism and leisure activities along nearby rivers and countryside paths contribute to the local appeal.
