Geography and climate

The city lies at the transition between high Andean terrain and montane cloud forest. Frequent mist, relatively cool temperatures and lush vegetation characterise the surrounding landscape. Rivers and steep ravines cut the region, creating diverse habitats that support orchids, bromeliads and a variety of birdlife, which attract naturalists and hikers.

History and culture

Before the Spanish conquest the broader region was inhabited by the Chachapoyas culture, sometimes called the "Warriors of the Clouds", known for stone constructions and hilltop settlements. The modern city was established under Spanish rule in the 16th century. Today Chachapoyas preserves local traditions, handicrafts and annual festivals that blend indigenous and colonial influences.
