Centre-Sud Region (Burkina Faso)

Administrative divisions

Centre-Sud is divided into three provinces, each of which is further subdivided into departments and communes. The three provinces are:

• Bazèga
• Nahouri
• Zoundwéogo

Geography and population

The region lies in a transition zone between Sudanian and Sahelian savannas, with a distinct wet season and a long dry season. Landscapes include cultivated fields, scattered woodlands and areas used for grazing. The population is predominantly rural, with communities engaged in smallholder farming and local commerce. Several local languages are spoken in addition to French, the national administrative language.

Economy and land use

Agriculture is the primary livelihood: farmers grow cereals (such as sorghum and maize), root crops and cotton as a cash crop in parts of the region. Livestock rearing and small-scale trading in market towns are also important. Infrastructure challenges—such as seasonal roads and limited access to services—affect economic opportunities and are common targets for development projects.

History and governance

The Centre-Sud Region was established as part of national efforts to decentralize administration and bring government closer to citizens. It is governed by a regional council and a governor appointed to coordinate public services, economic planning and development initiatives across the provinces.

Notable facts and challenges

Key issues for the region include adapting agricultural practices to variable rainfall, improving rural infrastructure, and expanding access to education and healthcare. At the same time, its markets and regional capital make Centre-Sud a local centre for commerce and public administration within south-central Burkina Faso.
