Central Lombok Regency is an administrative regency in Indonesia located on the island of Lombok, within the province of West Nusa Tenggara. Known in Indonesian as a Kabupaten, the regency occupies the central portion of the island and has Praya as its administrative center. It functions as a link between Lombok’s northern highlands and its southern coastal areas.

Geography and administration

The regency covers a mix of inland plains, foothills and coastal strips. Its territory is subdivided into several districts (kecamatan) and many villages, ranging from agricultural settlements to growing market towns. Central Lombok’s landscape supports rice paddies, dry-season farming, and pockets of remnant woodland in higher terrain. The island context gives the regency a role as a transit and service hub for surrounding districts.

People and culture

The majority of residents are ethnic Sasak, with Islam the predominant faith and Sasak language widely used alongside Indonesian. Traditional Sasak villages, including staged heritage settlements such as Sade and similar communities, preserve vernacular architecture, weaving and customary ceremonies. Local festivals, crafts and mosque-centered community life shape the regency’s cultural identity.

Economy, transport and development

Agriculture remains a mainstay of the economy, with rice, maize, and plantation crops cultivated on suitable land. In recent years infrastructure investment and tourism have become increasingly important. Central Lombok hosts Lombok International Airport near Praya, a significant transport gateway for the island that improves connections to other Indonesian islands and supports visitor access.

Tourism and notable places

The regency provides easier access to a variety of natural and cultural attractions: coastal beaches and surf-friendly stretches to the south, scenic rural landscapes, and proximity to Mount Rinjani’s slopes to the north. Visitors often combine cultural village visits with beach excursions and day trips to nearby islands accessible from Lombok harbors on Lombok.

Role and distinctions

As a centrally located regency, Central Lombok plays a balancing role between the island’s agricultural hinterland and its emerging tourism economy. Ongoing development focuses on improving roads, services and sustainable tourism to benefit local communities while preserving cultural heritage and natural resources.
