Overview
West Nusa Tenggara, known in Indonesian as Nusa Tenggara Barat, is a province of Indonesia situated in the western portion of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It excludes the island of Bali, which forms its own province. The provincial capital and largest city is Mataram, located on the island of Lombok. The two principal islands are Lombok and Sumbawa. The province covers roughly 19,708.79 km² and had a population of about 4.5 million at the 2010 census.
Geography and environment
West Nusa Tenggara stretches across a chain of volcanic and sedimentary islands between Bali and Flores. The landscape ranges from sandy beaches and coral reefs to steep volcanic mountains. Mount Rinjani on Lombok is a prominent stratovolcano with a large caldera and a crater lake, and it forms a focal point for hiking and nature tourism. Coastal ecosystems support fisheries, while inland areas sustain dryland agriculture.
History, people and culture
The province has a long history of Austronesian settlement with local ethnic groups such as the Sasak on Lombok and the Sumbawa (Samawa) on Sumbawa. Islam is the dominant religion, and local customs and crafts—woven textiles, pottery and ikat—remain important cultural markers. Traditions vary between islands and between coastal and interior communities.
Economy and uses
Tourism, agriculture and fishing are major economic sectors. Famous destinations include the Gili Islands off Lombok, known for diving and beaches, and ecotourism around Mount Rinjani. Agriculture produces rice, corn, beans and livestock; small industries include handicrafts and food processing. Infrastructure and services are concentrated in urban centers such as Mataram.
Administration and notable facts
The province is divided into several regencies and cities responsible for local governance. Visitors often travel from Bali to Lombok by air or ferry. Conservation concerns include coastal reef protection and sustainable tourism management. Further information about the province's administration, tourism initiatives and cultural heritage can be found through regional sources and official provincial pages.
