Central Governorate (Bahrain)
Former administrative governorate of Bahrain, abolished in 2014; included parts of several municipalities such as A'ali, Isa Town and Sitra, and covered central areas of Bahrain's main island.
Overview
The Central Governorate was an administrative division in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It existed as one of the country's five governorates until 23 September 2014, when a national reorganization of local administration eliminated the unit. During its existence the Central Governorate covered a swath of territory in the middle of Bahrain's main island and brought together urban neighbourhoods, residential towns and industrial zones under a single regional administration.
Geography and composition
Located roughly at coordinates 26°11′N 50°31′E, the governorate occupied central parts of the island and bordered several other administrative areas. It incorporated portions of older municipal divisions rather than following a single historic boundary. Principal constituent areas included:
- A'ali — a town known for its traditional crafts and ancient burial mounds;
- Madinat 'Isa (Isa Town) — a planned residential area and local service centre;
- Sitrah (Sitra) — an island and industrial district with commercial and port-related activity;
- Ar Rifa' wa al Mintaqah al Janubiyah and Al Mintaqah al Wusta — parts of larger municipal zones that contributed suburbs and agricultural lands.
Administration and role
As a governorate, the Central Governorate functioned as a mid-level unit of government responsible for local services, planning, and coordination between municipal authorities and national ministries. It was one of several governorates established to organize public administration, deliver municipal services, and represent local needs to central government. Information about the country's governorate system can be consulted through general references on governorates and on the state as a whole at Bahrain.
Economy, settlement and notable places
The area combined residential neighbourhoods and commercial corridors with pockets of industrial activity, especially near Sitra. A'ali is notable for its archaeological landscape and traditional pottery; Isa Town and neighbouring suburbs provided housing, education and retail services for residents of the central island. The mix of uses reflected Bahrain's broader pattern of urban growth, where historic villages, newer towns and industrial facilities lie close together.
History, reorganization and legacy
The Central Governorate was formed from parts of earlier municipal entities and existed until the 2014 administrative reorganization. On 23 September 2014 the government reduced the number of governorates and redistributed the territory formerly administered by the Central Governorate among adjacent units. Today the name survives mainly in historical and administrative references; the communities that once lay within it continue to be important components of Bahrain's urban and cultural landscape.
