The Cave Nebula (Sh2-155) is an emission, H II region in Cepheus. At about 2,400 light-years away it shows a dust-carved cavity lit by young stars and is popular with astrophotographers and star-formation studies.

Often catalogued as Sh2-155, it is notable for a dark, cave-like indentation set against bright, reddish hydrogen emission. Photographs taken with narrowband filters highlight the contrast between glowing ionized gas and silhouetted dust, producing the feature that inspired its common name.

Physical characteristics

As an H II region, the Cave Nebula emits light because ultraviolet radiation from nearby hot, young stars ionizes hydrogen in the surrounding cloud. The resulting recombination radiation, especially the Hα line, gives the nebula its characteristic red hue in many images. Dense dust lanes and molecular clumps carve the illuminated surface, producing arches and dark recesses that resemble a cave.

History and observation

The nebula was recorded in mid-20th-century surveys of emission regions and appears in the Sharpless catalog as Sh2-155. It is a common target for amateur and educational imaging; long exposures and narrowband techniques are typically needed to reveal fine structure. Under dark skies and with suitable equipment the region can be located within Cepheus and framed with modest telescopes.

Situated in a broader complex of star-forming clouds in Cepheus, the Cave Nebula provides a nearby example of how stellar radiation sculpts and triggers activity in molecular clouds.
